For those of you who no not what a "poetry slam" is allow me to learn you something,
Poetry Slam is a contest.... in that contest the best poet there may not win....
AGAIN...The BEST POET there may NOT WIN, In fact they have been known to come in last.
That said: an audience poll is collected which will result in the judge selection....
A contest between poets truely isnt fair, we all write differently.
However Slam poetry can be thought of as a performance.
So this is where us poets, step outside our words and dig into our voices.
Our verbal and non verbals play a huge part in the crowds exceptance.
We often lose ourself in the contest.
Our ego reign high only because thats what we believe it is. Who's the best.
ONE VOICE, ONE TEAM.
ONE SOUND
The true elements of a poet....
If we remember why we write then we can check ourselves, before we get lost in the game.
At the end of the day, I am a fan of poetry. Not just a poet. Not just a voice of a black man.
I am something more than that.
A VESSEL. A PROTOTYPE of SOMETHING BETTER.
We are brothers and sisters in a movement of art.
A poet such as Brook Yung (in video) can deliver his soul in a peice,
and still come in 3rd place....Just another example of how demanding poetry is on a poet,
and even then once all is said and done, you still might not have the impact
you were looking for...
